CEI was formed 2011 by its founder Mr. Vimalaraj with the intent to provide fee-based geotechnical engineering, construction inspection and materials testing services.
Mr. Vimalaraj has successfully completed numerous large infrastructure projects throughout Nevada, California, Utah and Hawaii. Mr. Vimalaraj maintains over 16 years of geotechnical engineering experience in design, construction and research. He has authored or co-authored over 1,000 geotechnical reports for various projects. He holds a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). He has performed geotechnical investigations for some of the major projects in the State of Nevada including Tesla Gigafactory, SouthEast Connector (Veterans Parkway), several million square feet of industrial/commercial buildings, several UNR buildings, large residential subdivisions and multiple school projects.
Mr. Vimalaraj is licensed as a Professional Engineer in Nevada, California, Utah and Hawaii, and as a Geotechnical Engineer in California.

2021
2020 - 2021: CEI is partnered with Atkins to provide construction engineering services to NDOT for full administration of 3R project on US 95 from Schurz to Fallon. For this project, CEI is providing a Level III Inspector, a Tester and a fully equipped mobile testing laboratory. This 3R project construction started around October 2020 and the construction is expected to ramp up starting March 2021.
2020 - 2021: Geotechnical consultation during construction of 2+ million square feet of aircraft parking and taxiway alpha reconstruction project at Reno-Stead Airport in Stead community area of Reno, Nevada.
2019 - 2020: Geotechnical investigation for 2+ million square feet of aircraft parking and taxiway alpha reconstruction project at Reno-Stead Airport in Stead community area of Reno, Nevada. Exploration included 40 borings and several pavement core holes. Laboratory testing including CBR, hydrometer, sieve analysis, insitu density, Atterberg limits and specific gravity. Geotechnical analysis and recommendations. All the work in accordance with FAA requirements.
2019 - Present: Geotechnical investigation and design for safety improvements projects at and near the intersection of Pioneer Trail and United States (US) Highway 50 in Meyers community area of El Dorado County, California. The project owner is El Dorado County and all the work is per Caltrans Standards. Exploration included borings, pavement corings, and borehole infiltration testing. Field work required extensive coordination with Caltrans, County and drilling and traffic control subcontractors. Geotechnical analysis and pavement design to develop recommendations for the design and construction of the project.
2018-2019: Geotechnical investigation for San Bernardino multi use path project in near Meyers community area of Eldorado County, California. The project includes a bike/pedestrian pathway connecting East San Bernardino Avenue and West San Bernardino Avenue including a 200 feet bridge crossing over Lower Truckee River. Extensive exploration and laboratory testing to develop geotechnical recommendations in accordance with Caltrans standards. Geotechnical analysis to develop recommendations for bridge foundations and retaining walls. Preparation of geotechnical investigation report to summarize exploration, laboratory testing, geotechnical analysis and recommendations.
2018-2019: Geotechnical evaluation of a failed shotcrete erosion protected slope on Oflyng Road in El Dorado County, California. Site investigation and laboratory testing to formulate geotechnical recommendations for a repair consisting of buttress segmental block wall or reinforced slope.
2017 and Earlier:
1. Geotechnical investigation for complete rehabilitation of 81-foot-wide right-away associated with Sierra Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe, California. The roadway extend from Palmira Avenue to Barbara Avenue and about 3,200 feet long roadway segment. The rehabilitation work includes the reconstruction of roadway, adding a bike trail on one side of the street, walking path on one side of the street, addition of street landscape and lighting improvements, and addition of storm water conveyance, treatment and infiltration features. The scope included field exploration, laboratory testing, geotechnical analysis and preparation of a geotechnical investigation report with recommendations for design and construction.
2. The slope stability evaluation of temporary excavation slopes on the project to construct multiple retaining walls on Pyramid-McCarran Intersection Improvement project. The scope of work included field exploration, lab testing and stability evaluation of the temporary slopes.
3. Segmental block wall on Pyramid-McCarran Intersection project.
4. Aggregate and Portland cement concrete (PCC) testing for the reconstruction of bridge decks associated with the NDOT Carlin Tunnel Project in Elko County, Nevada. Onsite Portland Cement Concrete Testing and Aggregate Sampling and Testing by NAQTC and ACI certified field personnel. All the work was completed per the NDOT standards and specifications as part of contractor QC.
